[tw: police violence, murder]
Submitted by: sydlow
Thanks sydlow! I just sent this flier to organizers and they love it.
Justice for Reynaldo Cuevas
Reynaldo Cuevas was shot and killed by an NYPD officer on September 7th, 2012, after escaping from an armed robbery at the bodega he worked at. He was dragged 25 feet away by police and left to bleed for 20 minutes as witnesses yelled at them, informing police that he was an employee of the store. A few days later the community held a vigil for Reynaldo and marched with his family to the 42nd precinct to demand justice. Since then, the Cuevas family has held a candlelight vigil every Saturday at the corner of the block here he was killed. Less than two months later, on October 27th, the NYPD rammed into the dirt bike Reynaldo’s cousin and friend were riding, killing one and paralyzing the other. A witness from the scene says the NYPD rammed into the dirt bike purposely.
We need to let the NYPD know, they cannot get away with this. We will not give up. We are stronger.

Was wondering if you could help get the word out about this.
This past weekend, on February 1, a fraternity at Duke University (my alma mater) called Kappa Sigma held an Asian-themed party called Asia Prime. The original invite (screen-capped above) includes the phrases ”Herro Nice Duke Peopre” and “Chank You.” Pictures from the event itself are also above. (More information here; student protest page here.)
Even more frustrating, fraternities at Duke has a history of hosting these sorts of offensive, insulting, marginalizing, dehumanizing themed parties, and a history of offering lame non-apologies for doing so.
Is this shit unbelievable, or is it unbelievable?
To all the privileged assholes I went to school with who told me that racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. were no longer a problem, especially on our college campus: What the hell were you talking about? Are you seeing this? Did we even go to the same school?
Here’s to hoping something will change here and on other college campuses too. In the meantime, please spread the word!
I’m a current Duke student and this morning I went with a group of other students to flyer the campus in protest of Kappa Sigma’s racist party. However, we were met with a coordinated effort to take the pictures down. Some of us had cameras confiscated by campus police and were forced by them to delete pictures. Almost within an hour, our nearly 1200 flyers were torn down.
[9:45 AM]
[11:30 AM - reported gone by 11:00 AM]
This absolutely cannot stand. That’s why this protest is so important. Even on our facebook page, people are telling us to be quiet, to shut up, to keep from bringing this issue and our university to ‘national attention.’ They tell us not to make such a big deal about it, that ‘it is understandable that some might be offended.’ By ripping down our flyers, they’re telling us to mute our voices because they’ll just be silenced anyway.
But we won’t. We won’t back down. This deserves attention and it deserves to be talked about. Duke’s history of demeaning and racist frat parties can’t be swept under the rug just so a school’s reputation can sit falsely pretty and pristine.
Some tell us to hush up and keep the peace. But this is my campus too, and I’m not about to clip my own vocal cords to keep you comfortable.
To those on tumblr and twitter: tag your posts about this with #racistrager so we can track ‘em! Let your voices be heard.

Okay just to clearly illustrate what has happened with Mulan, here is a convenient side by side where we discover that they have made her paler than Snow White. The character who is literally named after the paleness of her skin. Let’s all let that sink in for a moment. She’s not wearing her matchmaker scene makeup, she is apparently just now paler than “the fairest of them all.”
The picture on the left is their movie designs while the right is their new redesigns. (Sorry about the small size, this was all I could dig up as far as group pictures where they were standing next to each other.)

White privilege is always thinking that you know best even when you’re in someone else’s culture.
Submission from http://blackinasia.tumblr.com
White privilege is being able to say shit like “a bullet for every rapist,” “John Brown had the right fucking idea,” and simply “fuck skinheads and neo-nazis and the klan” in public, at a conversational volume loud enough for other (white) people to hear. White privilege is being able to express violent views towards oppressors in safety and being, if not applauded and appreciated, then at least not being physically attacked or arrested.
White privilege is not having to add on “-American” to your nationality to be recognized as one. Submission from suaibao.tumblr.com
And before anyone starts talking about Irish-American, German-American, Italian-American, how many generations before they have to drop the ‘foreign’ qualifier and are read as simply “American”? If those who themselves immigrated within their generation lose their accents before progeny is even considered, they can easily ‘pass’ as “just plain ole’ American”, and their children (who are generally raised without their parents’ accents) are definitely read without the foreign qualifiers, especially if they don’t visibly/audibly tout their ‘ethnic pride’. And when they do tout their ethnic pride, how often are they considered threats to this nation, to their neighbours and peers, for being proud of where they come from and their cultural differences? How often are they, instead, lauded for their celebration of their history, their culture, their differences, while the rest of us are, AT BEST, exotified (and, at worst, systemically dehumanised & often imprisoned, deported, and/or murdered)?
White privilege is having the luxury of being called an “ex-pat” when moving abroad, whilst everyone of colour is referred to as “immigrants” which has negative connotations.
White privilege is calling Roman-script Indo-European languages distinctly different while calling languages that use Chinese characters “all basically the same”.
Submission from co-edfightclub.
White privilege is when I get a good grade on an exam, it’s because of my ethnicity, but when my white friends get good grades, they “studied and worked hard for it”.

Taken from my dA journal:
So recently there’s been a bit of hubbub about whitewashing on artists-confessions.
And I wanted to speak my mind a bit about this, and hopefully encourage some discussion with you guys on it.
Warning: This is a long and personal rant.
If you can’t read personal views and opinions, or think that opinions shouldn’t be posted on the internet, stop reading now. I’ve warned you.
It seems like a growing number of people are complaining that artists, anime/traditional, etc but especially on dA from what I’ve heard, don’t draw or make a lot of OCs that are “PoC”s or “People of Color”.
While it is true that it is a dime a dozen to see a non-white OC, I don’t think that artists are REQUIRED to make non-caucasian OCs to be politically correct. That’s silly. If someone has an entire group of OCs, or a comic/manga with only caucasian or asian characters they are not necessarily racist. And it’s wrong to flame them or tell them so unless they are actively being racist. Sometimes that’s just the artist’s preference. Not everyone finds dark skin beautiful, and vice versa. Not all people prefer pale skin. And it might not even be that the artist doesn’t like other skin types. It could just be that they grew up around one kind of nationality, or like asian culture and want to draw those kinds of people.Just like it’s wrong to conform to the idea of racism, you shouldn’t force artists to conform to being politically correct and force them to draw characters who are not asian or caucasian. If they don’t want to draw it they don’t have to. Art is an extension of your imagination, an extension of your innermost thoughts. Your soul, even. It is not up to others to dictate to you how you should express yourself so that you can be more PC.
But it is good practice to try drawing all kinds of skin colors. It’s not a requirement of being a good artist, but it’s a good thing to experiment. And I personally love diversity. There’s so much you can learn from other cultures, so I’d never limit myself to only learning about one.
Disclaimer:You may say, but ehbi, your gallery is FULL OF CAUCASIANS/PALE CHARACTERS. YOU’RE A HYPOCRITE.
I don’t do a lot of personal work. Almost my entire gallery is made up of commissions from other people.
Just keep that in mind.
However, it DOES piss me off that there is a fucking acronym for people who aren’t white. I don’t see it as that important that someone isn’t white that they have to have a friggin’ acronym to generalize them into a group of people that aren’t white. That makes no sense.
Just like I don’t like it when people generalize others as white or black or asian when they refer to their ethnicity. “Black” isn’t an ethnicity and neither is “white”.
Not all “white” people are Russian, for the same reason that all “black” people aren’t from Africa. Which is why the term “African-American” also bothers me. You only really see this in America.
If Dolores’s great-great-great-sixteen times great grandfather was from Mongolia, but her great-great grandfather and all of his children were born and raised in Spain, intermarried with the Spanish people and etc, Dolores is, for all intents and purposes, Spanish and 1/144th Mongolian. She’s not Asian or Asian-Spanish.
It’s not the slavery days anymore. Everyone with dark skin was not born in Africa so why use the term “African-American” if they don’t have immediate ancestry there? Sure, maybe 500 years ago they had an ancestor from Africa, but why are we bypassing all of the other ethnicities that had to come into play before we were born? We’re talking about 500 years of people marrying or having children with either the same race or other races. The possibilities are endless.
In my opinion, “African-Americans” are first and second-or even third-generation Africans who either migrated to America or whose parents or grandparents migrated to America and ONLY married other Africans who had NO OTHER split ancestry whatsoever. Once you start adding other ethnicities in, you aren’t just “African-American” anymore. For example:
If your grandfather was Nigerian and came to America and married someone who was Balinese, your mother/father is Nigerian/Balinese-American, or African/Indonesian-American.Say your mother/father married a Russian-American. You’d be Nigerian/Balinese/Russian-American or African/Indonesian/Eurasian-American.
But the way the world is today, if you had dark skin and kinky/curly hair, you’d just be “black” or “African-American, or if you inherited your grandmother’s Balinese looks, You’d probably be classified as “asian” or even “indian” (by ignorant people).
And if you only inherited your Russian parent’s looks, you’d be classified as “white”.
But you’re obviously so much more than that.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not flaming other artists or blaming you if you have that kind of mindset. We were all raised to think this way by the government. I’m not being anarchist here, I’m just stating a fact. Most nations like to keep a close tab on the ethnicities that live in their country because of census and population data reasons. When we fill out applications or surveys or school-related or court-related documents the only options to choose are “Hispanic”, “White/Caucasian”, “Black/African-American/Negro”, “Asian”, “Pacific Islander” or “Other”. Unless you check the “Other” box, you’re usually forced to choose what other option you actually identify with.
Why would we refer to ourselves or others otherwise?
One day someone came into my livestream and said something along the lines of:
“What? I didn’t know you were black. My entire world is upside down.”
I had to correct them. I am not “black”. I was not born in Blackland. My mother’s parents are both South American (Brazilian and Guyana), but moved to America when they had my mother and aunt. Their parents and grandparents were from England but moved to South America and married and had children there.
My mother married my father who was born in America, but his mother was born in Puerto Rico, and his father was born in the Dominican Republic. Their parents were Native American, Spanish (from spain), and Indian (from India). Therefore, I’m Brazilian/Guyanese/Native American/Spanish/European and Indian.
I just call myself American.
Discuss:
Do you think that artists should make more of an effort to draw non-caucasian art?
Do you think that it’s wrong/right to refer to people with dark skin and kinky hair as African-American
regardless of where they’re really from?
What do you identify as?
What is your opinion on all of this?
This confession is so horribly…I literally had to laugh to keep from banging my head against my wall. I would bold all the things around with it but that would be the whole post really.
A colorless blob? Wat?
someone clearly has been huffing koolaid
One, as a first-generation diaspora Chinese person, I’d like to distance myself and all Asian peoples from this person who seems to think that Asian is an offshoot of white in being the default… Especially since they refer to Manga where characters are often explicitly Japanese but are presented without racial identifier - I’m surprised they didn’t pull a “but the Japanese draw manga characters as white!” fallacy.
secondly, Africa-American as a term exists for a reason, and that reason is both interesting and storied. in short, we can trace the sentiment behind the term to Marcus Garvey and the consciousness of the Black person in America as an extension of the African diaspora - in short, to provide a concrete (although in the abstract) ancestral link beyond the knowledge that people were brought to the new world in chains as property.
And the overlooked fact is that the geometry of ancestry is a privilege. We are perhaps three generations past integration, six generations past slavery? The One-Drop Rule meant that anyone who was in the slightest Black became solely Black. Alongside that, the separate record keeping for the Black population was considered subordinate and unimportant to White communities, so the files and records do not exist any more.
To be an African-American is to be mixed, but to only have access to the first-hand knowledge of that mixing. And finally, nobody sits outside race. To believe that you sit outside race - to believe that you CAN sit outside race - is purely a White supremacist fantasy. If race does not effect your life, you must be White, because the reality is that race does matter, if does influence the lives of POC, and the denial of race as a factor does a disservice to anyone with any understanding of the issue period.
The fuck is this shit
Also
If you are going to gripe about Asian communities and identifying as such or like the term African-American, you are discounting the fact that the cultures of groups like Asian-Americans and African-Americans are very different from the cultures of Africa or Asia. But nope. OP was just being ignorant. And I really don’t understand why “Black” is in quotation marks but white isn’t.
Not to mention there is not one singular Asian culture or community, they are seriously conflating race with ethnicity with nationality (none of which are the same thing)…
Why would we use something other than the arbitrary and racist categories concocted by the white supremist US government? I HAVE NO IDEA, WHY WOULD ANYBODY WANT TO SELF-IDENTIFY EVER WHEN THERE ARE TOTALLY PRETTY LITTLE BOXES ALREADY SET OUT FOR YOU TO CHECK?????
Oh wait look how much of a special snowflake they are, being a mixed baby like basically EVERYBODY EVER.
And re: the PoC acronym, the OP doesn’t see it as necessary to separate us? Then why does the rest of the world (and by ‘rest of the world’, I mean why do the systems and institutions in place that run and govern our lives put so much emphasis on those separations?
It’s like they want a whole damn batch of cookies for being such a colourblind sack of shit decent person.
Finally, are they… a ghost? CASPER CAN TYPE, YALL.
